Higashi Hongan-ji temple

Tokugawa Ieyasu (1542-1616), the first Shogun of Tokugawa shogunate, schemed to weaken the power of Hongan-ji sect. He donated an estate and established new Hongan-ji in 1602, that is Higashi Hongan-ji, or East Hongan-ji. The original Hongan-ji is called Nishi Hongan-ji, or West Hongan-ji since then. The buildings of Higashi Hongan-ji were burned down several times and current buildings were rebuilt in 1895.
